The Nicholson School believes that "it takes a village" to raise a child. We believe that the success of a child in school has a much to do with the child's nature and nurture as it does the teacher and the school that he / she attends. A loving, nurturing and supportive community of teachers and parents is as helpful to a child as the content of the curriculum. We understand the importance of creating strong relationships with each child and parent. Supporting parents while creating opportunities for them to get to know their child's teacher can only help the teacher know the child better. This individual knowledge leads to more accurate assessments of the individual child and consequently more appropriate interactions and adaptations to curriculum, resulting in greater success for the child.
We believe the other important component of a child's educational success is providing an environment where the child can learn through their own Multiple Intelligences. Acknowledging that individuals learn and represent knowledge through multiple experiences and representations allows for a more equal and appropriate introduction to knowledge. In our preschool classroom, this is represented by the power of play. Through play, the child is able to explore all of the senses while developing social / emotional and kinesthetic skills. The teacher provides appropriate activities that allow each child to explore and develop math, science and pre-literacy skills. Play then becomes the essence of learning for the young child.
Providing the best, first school experience possible for a young child takes us all. By creating an open community, a strong connection between parent, teacher and student, in an environment that encourages each child's Multiple Intelligences through the power of play, the Nicholson School works to achieve success for each young child.
